Firen

Firen, or Lysandrock Kaliper was lancer who wore and wielded the stuff of an elemental warrior. A frequent in the Nameless Town, Firen's face was recognized by many thanks to his ongoing patronage alongside many other usual visitors.

Firen would go on to become one of the Heroes of Nokkville and the eventual guild master of the Destrian branch of The Lancer Guild following the The Battle of Nokkville.

Overview #

Appearance #

Firen was a mostly self-taught pyromantic mercenary who primarily worked out of Destral. He wore a clearly aged suit of Phovezilan elemental warrior armour, and during his career as a lancer in the field, was determined to rarely if ever take it off in public. The insignia of his armor was scoured to the point of unrecognizability, which was the typical mark of a disavowed elemental warrior. Only those familiar with the intricacies of the Elementum Order would have recognized that Firen was no true Phovezilan soldier.

Underneath his armor, Firen was a ruggedly handsome, dark-haired, half-Phovezilan, half-Isutan man.

Reputation #

While some may have questioned his origins, Firen was a very reliable lancer. This gave him the luxury of easily finding work. Firen regularly took lancer contracts requiring combat, espionage, and bodyguarding. His travels made him frequent in Destral, Corgath, and The Eastern Provinces.

Personality #

Due to his family’s history and his own unfortunate upbringing, Firen’s paranoia kept his head on a swivel. He took no chances, allying himself with whatever would keep him alive and only making connections he felt were safe bets. He triple checked the information of anything given to him and he left absolutely zero bodies in his wake.

Underneath his paranoia was a strong loyalty to his family. Before his family settled down with him in Destral, Firen would send most of the money he made down to them while they lived in Shinok. Until he reunited with her in 265 DHT, Firen also kept his eyes open for his sister, Crystal, who had left her family behind to join the Coven of Fire.

Firen lived as frugally as possible, not even willing to invest in his own equipment most of the time--all in favour of ensuring the needs of his family were met. Firen would often be driven to extremism when things threatened the unity and safety of his family.

Flaw

Firen’s paranoia often kept him from taking risks that could greatly benefit his life, and received the reputation of being a fence-sitter. Firen usually ended up acting reactionarily rather than proactively.

Biography #

Family History #

Lance Kaliper was a member of the Phovezilan Elementum Order. He was a high ranking investigator who dedicated himself to rooting out civil unrest within Phovezilan borders. One lead took him to Icthy’s Rest, where he had been following gang activity that had led to several dead elemental warriors. Lance successfully apprehended the criminals and shut down their activities. What Lance didn't realize was that the criminals were members of the Riptide Ring, which held a bloated reservoir of vindictiveness and ruthlessness. Lance was visited by a high-ranking captain of The Ring, who tried to coerce him into dropping the case, but he would not be swayed. Lance prepared to transport the arrested gangsters to Phovezila, where they would be put on trial and likely executed. This decision would haunt him for the rest of his life.

The Ring fought back, using their own ties to reach into Phovezilan territory and give the families of Lance and the elemental warriors who helped him a good thrashing. The Phovezilan oligarchy caught wind of the Ring's activities against Lance and wanted to smooth over relations with them before it reached the desk of Captain Pants. Icthy’s Rest was too important to the Phovezilan economy, and its business and accessibility was at risk. It looked as though Phovezila was ready to disavow the elemental warriors and hand them over to The Ring. Lance and his unit decided to take matters into their own hands and faked their deaths to flee the country. They were successful. Lance fled through Destral and onwards to the Sangmyung Valley, managing to integrate with Isutan society. It was there that he met his wife, Soi Sewa. Lance began a family and began working as a civil servant to the Ganpoumi Fi.

Lance and Soi had two children. In 248 DHT they had their daughter Crystal and in 252 DHT they had their son Lysandrock. They lived in Boongket, a small city near Jingho. Lance eventually rose to become the head of the Boongket guard--a rare accomplishment for an outside to The Eastern Provinces--and trained his son in the art of pyromancy.

Early Life #

When the Eastern Civil War started, the city vehemently resisted Songkram conquest. By the time Songkram forces successfully crashed Boongket's gates in 266 DHT, most Ganpoumi Fi loyalists across Niman province had surrendered. Lysandrock his with his sister Crystal in a shelter alongside other women and children of the city. When a Songkram incendiary weapon detonated near the shelter, nearly every civilian hiding within was killed. Lysandrock was buried under so much rubble, ash, and scorched remains that Crystal mistook one of the burned corpses for his body. After this, Crystal received word that her parents had been slain and the city was surrendering to the Songkram. It was then that Crystal was taken in by the exploding witch Z'dra, and the two left the city before the Songkram could plant their flags. Lysandrock, clinging on to dear life, was rescued long after the fighting had ended. He had suffered severe injuries and malnourishment, but against all odds had survived. Thinking his sister dead alongside his parents, he stowed away on merchant carts to Shinok where his aunt and extended family lived.

Lysandrock lived with his cousins in Shinok for four years, and eventually resolved to keep his father's legacy alive by becoming a pyromantic lancer. He wanted to go out and see more of the world to take his mind off of the war-torn state of his homeland.

Lancer Career #

Lysandrock's first destination upon leaving the Eastern Provinces was Destral. At this point he was but an 18 year old pyromancer wearing battered Phovezilan armour recovered from his father's storage. No one knew what to think of him, but Destral was an easy place of second chances. He registered in the Lancer Guild under the name Firen and began taking contracts. He began working on contracts there and made a name for himself in the realm of armed escorts and bounty hunting. The Destrian Walking Police typically handled urban issues, so his bounty hunting took him to more remote regions in Corgath and even back to the edges of the Sangmyung Valley. The DWP would infrequently request Firen's services through the Guild, usually because of his Phovezilan-style elementalism which was rarely accessible outside of the Elementum Order.

In Destral, Firen usually stayed at an inn called “The Copper Tambaboo Inn,” which had Isutan themes and motifs woven into its architecture. The owners had Isutan heritage, which made Firen always feel a little more like he was at home.

Along his journeys, he met a woman named Eva and a man named Eleck. Both had fathers who served alongside Lance Kaliper in Phovezila. Eva taught Firen a bit of terramancy in exchange for him teaching her pyromancy. Eleck's life story was nearly identical to Firen's, allowing the two to bond closely. Eleck's father had fled to Corgath, married a Corgathian woman, and Eleck had become a lancer. Eleck was a particularly rambunctious ladies' man who seemed to be singular-minded on bedding the most beautiful women he could find across Legere. Eleck also tried hard to set Firen up with a girl, but Firen's focus lay elsewhere for most of his young adulthood.

Notable Jobs

  • Firen took a job to hunt down a serial burglar named “The Iron Thief” that was stealing valuables and tools from small villages across the Sangmyung Valley. Firen tracked purchases of stolen farmers' equipment and found him hiding in Jingho. Eiko Kataka, the Iron Thief, was Firen's age and operated out of a small hut within city limits. He would return to this hut after his bouts across the basin. Firen jumped him by surprise and managed to cuff him before he knew what was going on. Kataka attempted to fight Firen, but Firen burned his feet so he couldn’t run and dragged Kataka to Fi Lo Hok, where he turned him in to the Grandmaster’s custody.
  • There was a Destrian business executive officer by the name of Korzon Sealet who was going to be fired by his company's board soon, so he stole a trove of expensive equipment and fled to the city of Corgath. He sold it to a fence in Aramore and then fled. Firen tracked his movements to Rice Town and greased the palms of the Nakai there to let him make the arrest. Korzon’s arrest was easy, and Firen hauled him all the way back to Destral where he was jailed for ten years on top of a heavy fine.
  • A representative of the Arcane Hand reached out to Firen via recommendation from the Lancer Guild because he was a reputable bounty hunter with closed lips that kept to himself. The job was to track down a shadowmancer calling himself “Silent Shadow” who had been committing petty theft for years. The task was to track him down and bring him in alive, which Firen did successfully, though it was his longest bounty to date. He tracked his movements through villages and towns until he found him in Northeast Walwhite. Firen made himself known to an Arcane Hand operative named Benso Lastin while operating there. Benso helped him capture Silent Shadow. Once the Silent Shadow was caught, Firen left him to Benso and returned to Destral.

Reunion with Sister #

When he was about 21, he and Crystal finally met each other through happenstance and learned they weren't both dead. However, Crystal's life was clouded by the path of vengeance, leaving their reunion sour as she left to continue amassing power as a zawmancer. Seeing what Crystal had become, Firen began to make efforts to get her to give up on her obsession and come back to their family again.

The Heroes of Nokkville #

In 275 DHT, Firen found himself in the Nameless Town to look for work outside of Destral, mainly for a change of scenery. During his time there, he found himself working on a job alongside the Naga Red and the inventor Theodore Perry. As Firen continued to work alongside the two on subsequent jobs, Firen found himself caught up in the schemes of the Body of Ba'al.

During his work with the two, Firen would become close friends with Theo and Red, and eventually became Red's scale brother. Firen would even buy a house with Red for his cousins in Shinok to move to. Firen made record profits off of jobs alongside Theo and Red, eventually earning enough to retire. However, Firen wouldn't retire and instead continued to climb the ladder of the Lancer Guild.

During the Void Incident cleanup in Phaendar's Planar Tower, Firen would sustain a serious injury at the hand of a draconic Voidspawn. In the following days, Firen would become infested with a Void presence that granted him significant powers but whittled away at his sanity.

During The Battle of Nokkville, the Firen and his allies were able to overcome the necromantic forces of Pitch with the help of his Void mutations. After the defeat of Ba'al's avatar, the Archangel Michael cleansed Firen of this affliction. His sister, Crystal, also finally rejoined him and the rest of his family after assisting him in battle.

Lancer Guild Master #

Firen's passion for the vocation of lancing put him on an inevitable trajectory towards the top of the Lancer Guild. After the fame of the Heroes of Nokkville spread to Destral, Firen's reputation increased dramatically and afforded him opportunities to advance his career dramatically, even if he no longer needed the income. Firen would become one of Destral's wealthiest, but only secretly--he enjoyed a simple life with his family.

In 280 DHT, Firen's life would experience a minor bump after The Black Ghoul of Jingho entered Destral to hunt his sister. Fortunately, Firen and his sister were able to overpower the umbramancer with the help of Theo. After speaking with Crystal, the Black Ghoul would return home with a report saying that she had been killed, effectively aiding her in faking her own death so that the Songkram would lose interest in her and her family.
